Give and Gain Day 2011

Give and EVERYONE gains!

On Friday 24th June, we took part in Give & Gain Day – the UK’s only national day of employee volunteering, run by business charity Business in the Community.

Give & Gain Day 2011 is sponsored nationally by Eversheds LLP, Lloyds Banking Group and Hewlett Packard, in association with BT and Gyro HSR.

This our first year volunteering for this event, giving our employees who haven’t volunteered before the chance to try it out in a fun, group environment.

We were in good company; joining an international army of over 17,000 volunteers who were out and about making a positive difference in their local communities. It is believed that £1 million of man hours were injected in community projects around the globe by Give & Gain Day 2011 participants.

Working in teams, volunteers contributed their skills, talent and experience to help groups with real needs in the community. We spent the day at Meggs Alms Houses in Newham, a homeless shelter for elderly residents in the borough run by East Thames.

We gave up a day at work in exchange for painting parts of the exterior of the building, making much needed improvements to its appearance for the residents. They have very limited resources themselves and so the combined efforts of our team & supporters has made a big difference to their environment.

Extra special thanks goes to our supporters, as with their help, we were able to raise enough funds to provide the residents with a television for their common room. The room is now much more conducive to getting together and socialising.

After a recent consultation with its membership, Business in the Community identified employee volunteering as one of the key ways that businesses can develop meaningful, sustainable relationships with communities. Give & Gain Day demonstrates the power of employee volunteering and is an excellent way of introducing businesses to the impact they can have in local communities and the benefits it can bring to their business.
